Formatting
We use APA 7 citation style; APA format requires the author-date method for in-text citations. You should include the author's last name and the source's publication year directly in the text (e.g., Jones, 1998). Every source cited in the text needs a complete corresponding entry in the reference list found at the end of the document. Detailed instructions on APA 7 can be found on: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines
The most common examples of In-Text Citations and Reference List Citations are presented below.
In-text Citations
Single Author
When citing in text, use the author's surname without suffixes such as "Sr.".
According to Kripke (1980) ...
Previous studies have indicated a strong correlation between these two variables (Smith, 2020).
Two Authors
For sources written by two authors, always include both authors' surnames in every in-text citation. Use an ampersand (&) between their names when the citation is entirely within parentheses (e.g., (Smith & Jones, 2020)).
According to Kripke and Devitt (1980) ...
Previous studies have indicated a strong correlation between these two variables (Smith & Jones, 2020).
Three or More Authors
For sources with three or more authors, list only the first author's surname followed by "et al." in all in-text citations, including the very first mention of the source.
According to Kripke et al. (1980) ...
Previous studies have indicated a strong correlation between these two variables (Smith et al., 2020).
Organization as an Author
If the author of a source is an organization or a government agency, include the full name of the group followed by the year in the first in-text citation for that source.
The World Health Organization (2024) stated...
...as reported recently (World Health Organization, 2024).
Two or More Works
When including citations for two or more different sources within a single set of parentheses, list these sources alphabetically by the first author's surname (or organization name), just as they appear in your reference list. Separate each complete citation with a semi-colon.
